Garden Plant Feature: Clethra alnifolia, or Summersweet

An elegant, summer-flowering shrub that is easy to care for. These long spikes of scented blooms come at the time of year when we mostly rely on perennials or annuals for colour. Summersweet blooms are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. This hardy shrub is touted as being "deer-resistant", but these days we can't 100% guarantee anything against those 4-legged garden foe. This versatile shrub still blooms in part shade, can handle and even prefers wet feet (which is great for Victoria clay-based soil types) and won't overcrowd most gardens as it only grows to 4-6' in height and width with time.

'Vanilla Spice' has a lovely cream-white flower, while 'Ruby Spice' has a sweet rose-pink flower.

Your garden might be soaking up the sunshine, but it still needs a little TLC to make it through the hottest part of the season. Here are five easy things you can do to keep everything looking its best.

🌸 Deadhead those flowers

If your petunias, geraniums, or other flowering plants are looking a little tired, grab your pruners. Removing spent blooms encourages most plants to keep flowering instead of going to seed. A quick tidy can make a huge difference.

🌺 Give your pots a refresh

Not every annual loves the summer heat. If your spring flowers are looking past their prime, don't be afraid to swap them out. Fresh annuals are an easy way to keep your containers and garden beds looking colourful through the rest of the season.

🥬 Start your fall veggie garden

It feels early... but it's not! Now's the perfect time to start planting crops for fall. Lettuce, kale, spinach, carrots, beets, broccoli and cabbage all do well as the weather starts to cool.

🐛 Keep an eye out for unwanted visitors

Aphids, spider mites and slugs seem to show up overnight this time of year. A quick look over your plants every few days can save you a lot of headaches later. If you're not sure what's munching on your plants, snap a photo and bring it in—we're happy to help identify it.

🌼 Don't forget to pinch your mums

If you want big, bushy mums in the fall, now's the time to pinch them back. The same goes for many fall-blooming perennials like asters. Think of it as giving them a little haircut before they put on their fall show.
